This is it. My first blog. I’m hoping I don’t bore everyone to distraction and will try to keep you informed and entertained about what’s going on in Glens Falls – this sophisticated, but casual, little city in the upstate area.
It’s my mission to entice you to visit, to eat at our restaurants, to shop at our stores, go to our events & attractions, and then spread the word to your friends & families. Word of mouth speaks volumes!
To be perfectly candid, when I first came to this area well over ten years ago, I found little appeal in Glens Falls. It seemed a place in which I could not relate. Now fast forward to the present and the old advertising slogan “You’ve Come a Long Way, Baby” springs to mind. Thriving, yes, but still with that cozy hometown feeling; its charm and potential is palpable and expansive. What’s not to love?
So, let’s get rolling. First stop on the Tourism Train is LARAC’s Fine Arts & Crafts Festival taking place Saturday & Sunday, June 12 & 13, in/around City Park. For those of you who have been living on Planet Mars (or simply from out of the area), LARAC stands for Lower Adirondack Regional Arts Council. Its mission is to promote fine artists from around the region.
If you like quality paintings, pottery, jewelry, woodworking, quilting, sculpture, or art in any other possible media, this is the place for you. Really. It’s fun and you’ll bring back a treasure or two. Think of your long shopping list for Christmas now and you’ll be ahead of the game. No stressing yourself come December 24th.
Other organizations take advantage of the large LARAC crowds by offering their own events. You may want to also check out:
-
Sat, June 12 (9am-1pm): Chapman Historical Museum‘s annual plant sale. 348 Glen St.
-
Sat, June 12 (9am-2pm): Great American Lawn Sale @ Glens Falls Senior Citizens Center. 380 Glen St. Bargains galore!
-
Sat, June 12 (10am-5pm): The Shirt Factory @ the corner of Lawrence & Cooper Sts. OK, here’s the deal with this place. It’s a crazy maze of highly creative, high quality craftspeople & artisans in an old shirt factory building…plus some other businesses (like a fab tea shop and quilting store) thrown in for good measure.
“Have a Seat” & Make Yourself at Home
There’s nothing like public art to make a city feel like it’s all dressed up and ready to go out on the town. This summer, from now til September 6, “Have a Seat in Glens Falls” adorns downtown with 38 beautifully details, funky, fun and fanciful Adirondack chairs. So while you’re strolling around, take a long look, feel free to have a seat (literally) and enjoy the imagination of each artist.
I’ll be posting a different chair each week. This one is called “Glens Falls National Bank” by artist Cheryl Smith and sponsored by (surprise!) Glens Falls National Bank. We love the bank – they immediately stepped up as the Presenting Sponsor for the project.
Blog me back and let me know which chair you like the best – and why!
OK, gotta run. Bye for now, Alice
PS. Remember to always get your pets spayed or neutered.
