“History cannot give us a program for the future, but it can give us a fuller understanding of ourselves, and of our common humanity, so that we can better face the future.” Robert Penn Warren
The interpretation of history means different things to different people, but historic buildings mean one thing – that a city care about, and for, the places that were important to their past and should remain a part of their future. Glens Falls has an astonishing 161 places on the National and State Historic Registries! Included is the Civil War Monument (see detail of the beautifully rendered eagle at the top) and the Glens Falls Cemetary. Did you know the last Pony Express rider is buried there? Beautiful old commercial buildings – some are still in need of TLC – and others, thanks to Messrs. Hoffman, Kaidas, and Levinsky, are standing proud and cared for, Drive around and you’ll also see a plethera of homes that grace our almost 4 square miles.
Speaking of history, our own Chapman Historical Museum at 548 Glen Street invites you to “Special Places: An Exhibit Featuring YOUR History”. So whether you can relate to growing up a la Cleavers or Griswolds (or somewhere in between), you’ll enjoy a trip down memory lane with a personal perspective. The community actually shares its past as part of the mueum’s exhibition. For more info call 518-793-1826.
Bye for now, Alice
