Ghostly Encounters with Benjamin Franklin
GHOSTLY ENCOUNTERS WITH BENJAMIN FRANKLIN
- Old Fort House Museum, 29 Broadway, Fort Edward, New York
- Wednesday - Saturday evenings, 7:45 p.m. & 9:00 p.m. through Halloween
GHOSTLY ENCOUNTERS? Yes, GHOST TOURS! Right here in Fort Edward! Join our spirit channeling Ben Franklin for ghost-seeking and witty conversation as he walks through the haunted grounds of the historic Old Fort House Museum. Come and see the area where those poor, wretched souls fleeing Fort William Henry, abandoned by Fort Edward’s much despised General Webb, staggered in after the bloody massacre of 1757.
Who was here before us? Paleolithic and other Indians, French & Indian War and Revolutionary War soldiers and luminaries such as George Washington, Ben Franklin, Marquis de Lafayette, Robert Rogers & his Rangers, the adventurous Baroness Frederika von Riedesel, Sir William Johnson, Benedict Arnold and Solomon Northrup to name a few. Also farmers, doctors, writers, men, women and children -- many people were!
What happened here? Picture it! In the 1750s Fort Edward was the third largest city in the Colonies next to Boston and New York City. It was a vast garrison encompassing a military of 65,000. Whatever happened further to the North, began at Fort Edward. In 1757, Fort Edward’s commanding officer, General Webb, refused to help the desperate men, women and children being pounded by the French only 16 miles away at Fort William Henry. It gets worse . . . after surrendering and laying down their guns, they suffered devastating massacre by Indians and had to run for their lives in desperation to reach Fort Edward with only the sound of intermittent cannon fire guiding them. Imagine running through the dark of night with only the sound of cannon fire guiding you to safety!
