Hey foodie friends! I’m looking for some input from you all.
I recently went out to eat at a place I enjoy very much. I had a great meal. The service was great. My experience was wonderful!
The reason I was compelled to post was the woman at the next table who was trying to order and receive a gluten free meal. The kind server did not know what gluten free is and kept bringing food that had to be sent back because it had ingredients containing gluten. I thought WOW, anyone who owns, cooks at or serves food in a restaurant needs to be aware of the importance of requests for gluten free food! Food allergies in general really.
Eating gluten free is not a fad diet. I personally know a good number of people with Celiac disease and other health issues that require them to cut gluten out of their diets. It’s no joke. Gluten causes some people to become quite ill.
Please be aware and know what you are serving to people. This does not mean you need to be an expert on the subject. Listen carefully and be sensitive to the needs of people with allergies. Food allergies and dietary needs are not a joke.
I am still doing my homework and trying to come up with an easy checklist to help restaurant employees and people with allergies navigate through a great dining experience. Grilled steak and a fresh salad is a great option! Be careful to make sure no gluten products have been on the same cooking surface and you’re good to go!
Please share your thoughts and tips with me. Here is a list of some of the things I know to look out for.
An allergy to gluten is not just an allergy to flour. Some products such as bottled sauces and dressings may contain gluten.
Here are a few I know off the top of my head:
- Anything made with flour (breads of all kinds, bread crumbs, biscuits, crackers, croutons, pasta, pizza crust, pretzels, stuffing)
- Cereal
- Gravies & sauces
- Imitation seafood (just plain wrong in general in my book)
- Licorice
- Teriyaki
- Soy Sauce
- Some vinegars/mustards
