Butoh Familia: Waves of the Sea

Butoh Familia: Waves of the Sea is a contemporary butoh dance work exploring Jewish ancestral and spiritual inheritance across generations—moving memory, embodying ancestry, and transforming inherited history into a living archive.

Inspired by the artist’s great-grandfather, a renowned rabbi, and his 1912 religious book, from which the piece takes its name, the work fuses his Kabbalistic legacy with Jewish dance and music rooted in familial and historical events, expressed through butoh, an avant-garde form of Japanese dance that uses imagery, memory, and deep physical states as its movement base.
