From Craters to Companions: Glens Falls Launches "Adopt-A-Pothole" Community Program

By Mae Tallon

Tired of your car's suspension getting a workout every time you head to the grocery store? Glens Falls has officially announced its first-ever "Adopt-A-Pothole" program, giving residents the chance to claim and name their favorite neighborhood craters this spring.

The initiative, which local officials are calling a "community-driven infrastructure innovation," encourages the public to take pride in the city’s most well-traveled asphalt apertures by “adopting” a pothole.

Under this new model, residents aren't just naming a crater; they are committing to a Direct-to-Asphalt (DTA) sponsorship, where a one-time fee covers the cost of its specific repair later this spring.

“We’ve seen the success of adopting highways and park benches,” a city spokesperson noted. “By allowing a resident to personally bankroll the filling of a specific dip on Glen Street, we’re essentially letting the community fast-track their own road repairs.”

The Adoption Process

Under the new sponsorship program, residents can browse an interactive map of available craters on Glen Street, Bay Road, and other city neighborhoods. For a nominal "Adoption Fee" based on the depth and cubic volume of the hole, participants will receive an official, framed Certificate of Adoption and naming rights for the 2026 season.

While adopters aren’t expected to physically repair the road themselves, the city is offering a "Premium Patch" upgrade. For an additional fee, sponsors can actually choose the color of the high-durability cold-patch used to fill their designated hole. Options include "Safety Salmon" for high visibility, "Adirondack Evergreen" to blend with the scenery, or "Classic Slate" for the traditionalist.

A Future "Pothole Pageant"

Beyond the naming rights, adopters are encouraged to "check in" regularly, take photos for the pothole's dedicated social media page, and even decorate the surrounding area with small floral arrangements or tiny "Under Construction" dioramas.

The city has even hinted at a future "Best Dressed Pothole" contest, with categories like "Deepest Personality" for those particularly cavernous dips that have survived the most plow-blade hits.

The program is set to run through late spring as road repairs get underway. Stay tuned for further announcements regarding the official "Available Craters" map and the launch of the DTA sponsorship page later this month.

Also, have a happy April Fools everyone!
