The 42 Degrees head shop has been at its current location on Glen Street since 2019, and a Glens Falls business since 2008. Owner Robin Barkenhagen expanded to include a second location in Malta in 2020, and then opened a tavern above the Glens Falls location in 2021. And he might not stop there!
Check out what to expect from this new tavern, revisit the wide array of impressive products at the head shop, and find out what may be coming down the pipeline from Barkenhagen.
Introducing a New Bar & Live Music/Comedy Venue to Glens Falls
42 Degrees Tavern serves up beer, wine, cider, and light snacks (no liquor), and has already established itself as a solid place to see bands play and stand-up comedians perform. They’ve hosted regular shows and open mic nights since their July 2021 opening.
As you head upstairs from the 42 Degrees head shop (staircase will be to your left), you’ll see a yellow “No Miners Beyond This Point” sign before you reach the bar. The tavern space has a wall filled with a beer can collection, vintage video games like Galaga that guests can play for free, a television with some seats in the corner, and a space for bands to perform.
42 Degrees Tavern is open Wednesday to Sunday 4pm to 12am; Wednesdays are Karaoke Night, Fridays are Open Mic, and Sundays are Comedy Open Mic. The 42 Degrees head shop on the first floor is open Monday to Saturday 9am to 10pm, and Sunday 9am to 6pm.
Rediscovering Exquisite Glass Art & More at 42 Degrees Head Shop
The head shop on the first floor offers a plethora of cannabis- and smoking-related products, CBD products, posters, jewelry, and many other fun odds and ends, including snacks one might crave after consuming cannabis, like chips and candy.
However, 42 Degrees specializes in “functional glass art” (literally, some pieces are thousands of dollars and can only be described as works of art). The shop has been known to host glass blowing demonstrations, and you’ll never be bored walking around, checking out everything the unique store has to offer.
A Possible Dispensary in Glens Falls’ Future? Barkenhagen Hopes So!
Robin Barkenhagen not only owns the 42 Degrees head shops and 42 Degrees Tavern, but he’s also President of the Glens Falls Collaborative and plays in a jam band called Half Step. If you’re wondering if this ambitious and prominent presence in Glens Falls is looking to take on another venture now that cannabis has been legalized in New York, you are correct.
Barkenhagen does hope to open a dispensary separate from the head shop when the time comes; he estimates around January 2023 is when the State will start allowing the sale of cannabis and cannabis products. He hopes to open one in Malta as well. Municipalities have until the end of the year to opt in or out of cannabis sales (and related tax revenue), so stay tuned!
When asked if he’s worried about competition with other dispensaries popping up in the area, Barkenhagen said, “I already have a leg up [in the industry]. A lot of people are just talking that they’re going to start one, and don’t know what they actually need to do, or how much work it actually is.”
