The Adirondack Thunder hockey team, the ECHL affiliate of the NHL’s Calgary Flames, partnered with the American Red Cross to collect over 200 pints of blood during the 7 Days of Hope blood drive in August.

Red Cross officials said the blood drive has the potential to support 624 patients in the area. Each donor received a complimentary flex ticket to an Adirondack Thunder home game at the Glens Falls Civic Center during the 2016-17 season.

The 7 Days of Hope Blood Drive was held at seven different locations in Glens Falls and Queensbury, including Glens Falls Hospital and the Queensbury Hotel. The Thunder had their mascot, Gunnar, in attendance for the final drive on Sunday, Aug. 7, at the Glens Falls YMCA, to help promote the event. The Thunder gave out tickets to each donor, resulting in over 200 tickets donated, a $2,600 value.

Hudson Headwaters was named a National Quality Leader by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), a federal agency that oversees the community health center programs across the country.

The recognition includes an award of $279,701 to be used for additional quality improvements. Only seven of the state’s 62 community health centers achieved recognition as National Quality Leaders, and only 70 did so in the entire country.

To qualify for this award, Hudson Headwaters surpassed national quality benchmarks for chronic disease management, preventive care, and perinatal/prenatal care.

This year’s award is the fourth largest award in the state, and 14th largest in the nation.

Hudson Headwaters also received award funds for reporting clinical measures using electronic medical records, demonstrating improvements in one or more clinical measures, and having the highest clinical performance compared to its health center peers.

The Glens Falls Foundation awarded a $6,000 grant to the Warren, Washington and Albany Counties chapter of NYSARC Inc., (WWAARC) for construction of multi-use recreational hiking trails and athletic courts for people with disabilities.

WWAARC supports people with intellectual and other developmental disabilities and their families.

The planned multi-use recreational complex will include a range of facilities for physical activities and meaningful experiences that are not available locally for people with disabilities, including a softball field, bocce ball courts and outdoor volleyball courts. It will also feature a walking and hiking trail with sensory stimulation components and wheelchair-accessible exercise stations.

The complex will be located on part of the WWAARC’s headquarters on Quaker Road in Queensbury. The 20-plus-acre property features a pond and a variety of wildlife. The facilities will be open to the public.

WWAARC has also been in discussions with Special Olympics, SUNY Adirondack and Team Red, White and Blue to provide recreational activities for veterans and members of the community.

The design phase is nearly complete and the organization hopes to begin construction on the project this fall.
