Business Brief: October 2016

Posted onOctober 13, 2016November 8, 2017

Arrow Financial Corp., the parent of Glens Falls National Bank, was recognized by Forbes as one of “America’s 50 Most Trustworthy Financial Companies” for its accounting and governance practices.

This is the fifth consecutive year the Glens Falls-based company has received the designation from Forbes. Arrow is the only New York-based bank listed for 2016.

To create its “Most Trustworthy” list, Forbes enlisted MSCI ESG Research to evaluate nearly 700 publicly traded North American financial companies with a market cap of $250 million or more for the year ending December 2015. Factors including high-risk events, revenue and expense recognition methods, SEC actions, and bankruptcy risk were all considered as indicators of a company’s credibility.

The complete article can be viewed online by visiting Forbes.com and searching “Most Trustworthy.”

The Lake George Land Conservancy (LGLC) announced the recent addition of two new directors to its board, George Morris and James W. Wolitarsky.

Morris recently finished his 31st year with Oliver Wyman, the international management consulting firm and part of Marsh and McLennan, where he is a partner in the Financial Services group based in New York City. His consulting career began after graduating with an MBA from the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business (1985) and an AB from Dartmouth College (1980).

He is semi-retired and leads the firm’s social impact initiative out of the New York office and contributes to developing future generations of management advisors.

Morris resides in Pilot Knob, N.Y., and he is a second generation member of the Lake George Club and raced sailboats there for many summers.

Wolitarsky is the former president and chief executive officer of Janney Montgomery Scott LLC, a major U.S. east coast full-service financial services firm headquartered in Philadelphia. He received a B.A. degree in 1968 from Franklin & Marshall College and earned a M.B.A. degree in 1973 from New York University. He served in the U.S. Army as a sergeant from 1968 to 1970 with service in Vietnam and was decorated with a Bronze Star and Vietnam Cross of Gallantry.

Wolitarsky is currently a board manager of Pennsylvania Hospital, a core member hospital of the University of Pennsylvania Health System; a director of D.A. Davidson Companies, a regional securities broker-dealer doing business in the western United States and a director of Pennsylvania Trust Co. He has served on many boards, including as vice chairman and treasurer for the FUND for Lake George, and has lectured nationally and participated in a wide array of financial conferences and forums.

He and his wife, Nini, bought their current home on the lake in 2006.

The Hyde will hold its annual gala on Saturday, Oct. 29, 6-10 p.m. at the museum.

This year’s event coincides with the opening of Artists of the Mohawk-Hudson Region exhibit, giving guests an opportunity to preview the 80th anniversary of the longest-running juried show of contemporary art in the country.

The museum will also honor Werner Feibes for his recent donation of art and cash totaling more than $11 million.

The evening begins with a cocktail reception, followed by a dinner designed by Lily and the Rose. There will be a raise-your-paddle auction and live music by Body & Soul.

The gala is the museum’s most important fundraising event of the year, helping support education programs and exhibitions.

The S.A.V.E. Lake George Partnership became the beneficiary of two special events held this summer in Lake George that raised a total of $12,500.

Lake George Village Mayor Robert Blais presented the partnership with a check covering the net proceeds of the second annual King George Fishing Derby and the fourth annual S.A.V.E. the Lake Music Festival.

The Fishing Derby resulted in 151 anglers competing for $15,000 in prizes. Fishermen came from as far away as Maryland to compete in three divisions for large and smallmouth bass and lake trout. Entry fees this year generated a return of $5,000 for the S.A.V.E. Partnership.

This year’s music festival raised $7,500 for S.A.V.E. with attendance in Shepard Park exceeding 2,000. The funds came from vendor fees, T-shirt sales, and admissions.
