Tucked away in North Creek is a different kind of chocolate store that is being visited by people from all over the region.
Deb Morris, co-founder of Barkeater Chocolates, said it was simply the love for chocolate that she and her husband, Jim, share that led them to this sweet concoction.
Morris said she worked in television production for a local channel for years before she and her husband opened the store. It was something they thought about for years before taking the next step.
She started studying under chocolatiers and pastry chefs, learning to create artisan truffles with wholesome ingredients and unique flavors, while her husband tackled the business plan.
In 2008, the couple made Barkeater Chocolates a reality. A few years later, in 2013, they made the decision to open a second store.
“It started with an insane love for good chocolate, feeling a bit disappointed with the options out in the marketplace, and wanting to make a product that was delicious and pure,”said Morris.
She credits the success of the business to combining a bit of whimsy with fresh ideas.
“Our uniqueness comes from our flavor combinations and our sense of humor. Our success is a product of hard work, a great team, fantastic customers and our devotion to them by using only all natural and wholesale ingredients, never fillers,” said Morris.
Morris also credits the success to not only her husband, but to their experienced staff as well. She said the team includes chocolatiers, retail and packaging associates, along with tasting representatives.
Morris said they are continuing to grow and along with that means expanding the team.
Barkeater manufactures chocolate confections for wholesale and retail, making everything at the factory in North Creek. Their all-natural chocolates are sold in over 200 retailers throughout the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions, as well as online and in the factory store.
Products include Barkeater Bars in six flavors, Barkeater Bark in several varieties and our deliciously addictive Grown Up Peanut Butter Cups, a locally sourced all-natural crunchy peanut butter, a full line of truffles and caramels.
They also carry hot cocoa mixes and seasonal treats like the 1.25 pound giant truffles at Easter and Thanksgiving.
