Employees need to know that their efforts are appreciated. In the daily rush of running a business we often forget that. Please don’t!
All too often, we think that paying someone is reward enough. It is not! Creating a culture of achieving costs little but has big rewards for you and your customers. People need reinforcement. If you have kids, you already know that. The one time they clean their room, they want a big compliment. Just remember, that compliment costs nothing. So, hand it out.
Your employees want the same, just to be complimented on achieving routine tasks. Start with simple compliments. “It was good to hear the way you dealt with that difficult customer!” Or try – “that product you produced today looks great.” These are the little ways you can help employees see how their everyday tasks are relevant to your business success.
There are other ways to reward good behavior. Many of my clients use spot bonuses. Set a goal and hand out $10 Stewart’s Gift Cards. It may not mean much to you. But many of your people will appreciate the gesture and a week of free coffee. Cater in lunch when you meet goals. Customer service ratings above 9 (on a 10-point scale). Or 99% success in shipments.
Gather your management together and set your own goals for your business. Then reward those people who make it happen. You will be surprised to see how quickly your company’s morale improves.
