Glens Falls Hospital has undergone a major expansion in surgical services for the region, including significant growth of Surgical Specialists of Glens Falls Hospital, as well as an additional physician practice location and two new surgical suites within the existing hospital.
Dr. Gregory Tillou was the first surgeon to join Surgical Specialists of Glens Falls Hospital. He has extensive experience in general surgery and robotic surgery, and is currently seeing patients in the lower level of the Pruyn Pavilion of Glens Falls Hospital.
He will be joining together with five general surgeons from the privately-owned, Glens Falls-based practice, Baywood Surgical Associates, who will also become employed providers of Glens Falls Hospital.
Dr. Steven Scalia, Dr. Michael Lieberth, Dr. Joseph D’Agostino, Dr. Matthew Anderson and Dr. P. Gregory Scalia have a long history in this community with over 60 years of combined expertise, having performed over 20,000 cases since 1995, hospital officials said. They have an extensive commitment to our region, performing all types of general surgical procedures including thyroid surgery, gastrointestinal and skin cancer surgery, robotic surgery and breast surgery.
Dr. Gregory Scalia is currently the chief of robotics surgery at Glens Falls Hospital and was instrumental in starting the robotics program.
All of the surgeons are board certified and fellows of the American College of Surgeons.
“Baywood Surgical Associates, and its physicians and staff, are proud to continue a long tradition of service in this community as partners with Glens Falls Hospital,” said Dr. Steve Scalia, founder of Baywood Surgical Associates.
Glens Falls Hospital plans to further expand surgical specialists by integrating three existing Glens Falls Hospital physician practices—the Center for Lung and Chest Surgery, Adirondack Urology, and Orthopedic Specialists of Glens Falls to the surgical specialists team.
These providers include Dr. Louis DeCunzo, a thoracic surgeon; Dr. Vincent Cooper, Dr. Harry Slatch and Dr. Kari Sudfeld, FNP, urologists; and Dr. Thomas Varney and Dr. Jordan Haskins, RPA-C, orthopedics.
Plans are already under way to create integrated and advanced physician practice space for the expanded surgical specialist group within the 14 Hudson in Glens Falls building. Glens Falls Hospital is leasing roughly 26,000 square feet of the newly constructed Bonacio building adjacent to the hospital’s Emergency Department.
Split between the first and second floor, the new location will include modern, state-of-the-art, specialty physician practice space. Interior construction of the new office is expected to start this summer.
In early 2019, the six general surgeons from Baywood Surgical Associates, Dr. Tillou and the providers of Adirondack Urology, the Center for Lung and Chest Surgery, and Orthopedic Specialists of Glens Falls will be joining together as Surgical Specialists of Glens Falls Hospital 14 Hudson Avenue.
The general surgeons of Baywood Surgical Associates will remain at their current location on Baywood Drive in Queensbury until the construction of the new office is complete.
“Glens Falls Hospital is so excited to have all these surgical specialists join together as one practice,” said Patti Hammond, vice president for physician practice management of Glens Falls Hospital. “We look forward to continuing our exceptional reputation and providing the community with high-quality surgical care.”
Surgical Specialists of Glens Falls Hospital will conduct patient consultations at the 14 Hudson location, with surgeries and major procedures being performed at Glens Falls Hospital. Two new operating rooms at Glens Falls Hospital will further enhance the surgical experience for patients, families and physicians, officials said.
In 2017, the hospital received a large private donation for the construction of two new operating rooms. This project also included the construction of a new admission area, Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) and nurses’ station. These new ORs are equipped with interactive technology that permits voice commands from providers and nursing staff.
The new technology also transfers images taken during the procedure directly and seamlessly to the hospital’s electronic medical record system. The new system confidently meets the highest standards of patient safety and comfort, bringing the most advanced medical technology to the region.
“We continue to invest in the services and technology that is needed in the region to ensure our patients have access to the highest quality of care, through the recruitment of new providers and the establishment of new locations,” said Dianne Shugrue, president and CEO. “This advancement of surgical services and facilities represents Glens Falls Hospital’s ongoing expansion plans and our commitment to our patients for all their care needs, from primary care, surgical and specialty services, emergency care, and everything in between.”
