After a 43-year career as a professional
engineer in the Capital District, Gary Male
retired as president from the firm that bears
his family name.
Founded in 1910 by his grandfather,C.T. Male
Associates Engineering, Surveying, Architecture
& Landscape Architecture PC has grown from a
one-person land surveying firm to a multi-discipline
firm that employs over 140 people. The
firm has headquarters in Latham, but has offices
and personnel in Glens Falls, Highland, Red
Hook, Syracuse and Johnstown, and recently
established a presence in Mechanicsburg, Pa.

“We’ve grown in response to our clients’ needs” said Male, “Although we provide individual services, like a boundary survey for the sale of a commercial parcel, clients today are often looking for a firm that can manage a project from start to finish. The same client buying a parcel of land for commercial development probably would be in need of an environmental site assessment, and will need to work with the local municipality to secure the necessary approvals and permits for whatever they plan to construct.”
“Our value,” he said, “is that we bring our clients a vertically integrated solution with a single point of contact for all of the various services required to move a project from conception to completion. It ultimately helps clients to control costs, and increases the likelihood of bringing their projects “on time and within budget”. Male said his retirement was not a surprise and other officers in the company had time to plan for it.
“One of the things I am most proud of is that the firm is in excellent shape,” said Male. “Mr. Garrigan has been with the firm since 1985, beginning as a survey crew chief and having advanced through various positions in the firm.” Said Garrigan, “I am excited that the board of directors has entrusted me with this new responsibility. C.T. Male has a longstanding reputation for service, quality and commitment to the community that I intend to continue, while growing and developing our business in new ways.”
Most recently, Garrigan was vice president of the firm’s largest division. Land Services, and since 2009 he has served as chairman of the noard.
Dave Roecker, PE, was named chief executive officer last fall and succeeds Garrigan as board chairman.
“We have a highly experienced group of officers guiding the company and providing strategic direction” Male said. “All of the officers have been with the firm for 20 years or more. We spend time on succession planning, and we recently promoted four high performing, long term employees to manage the Survey, Land Development, Civil and Environmental divisions. I think that the future for this company has never looked brighter. There is more opportunity now than I’ve ever seen at any point in my career, and we are staffed to handle it competently.”
He added, “We have a very diverse base of clients in both the public and the private sectors. Many have done business with us for over 30 years, and we are also getting our first projects from some who are just moving to the area as the nanotechnology market develops. We are capitalizing on new technology and emerging client needs. For example, we’ve developed an Energy Services Division in response to that growing market and to assist our clients with a variety of services related to energy savings and sustainability.”
Garrigan joined the firm as a survey crew chief and advanced through the firm holding various management positions. He has served a wide variety of clients and directs multidiscipline project teams for projects involving surveying, GIS, engineering and environmental services. He brings over 30 years of experience to his new position.
Garrigan earned an associate’s degree in civil technology from Hudson Valley Community College, and is active in the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC). He is a licensed land surveyor in New York, New Jersey, North Carolina, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania.
