Fifty years old and still going strong, the Lake George RV Park and Campground is planning a $1.5 to $2 million upgrade at the end of the 2017 season, according to CEO Dave King.
The park is “always a work in progress,” he said.
The RV park, family operated since King’s parents opened it in 1966, functions from the first Friday in May until Columbus Day weekend in mid-October. Its 370 RV sites and campground can accommodate more than 1,000 visitors.
The project will include upgrading of one of the four swimming pool areas at the park. The targeted outdoor pool and wading pool date from 1976. The area was chosen for an upgrade on the basis of a customer survey.
“It was high on the list of requests,” King said.
The owners are still awaiting state Department of Health approval for the pool plans, but all other permits are in hand.
A new, 80-foot by 40-foot swimming pool is planned, along with a spa large enough for 38 people to soak. There will be a “spraygound” for children, along with water slides. The beach will be enlarged and additional deck space will be added.
A new 1,269-square-foot building will house mechanical equipment, bathhouse, and bathrooms.
King expects to request bids soon. He said construction will start in the fall. Everything should be ready in July 2018.
“Swimming pools today are not inexpensive to build,” King said, largely because of upgraded safety requirements and the need to comply with provisions of the Americans with Disabilities Act. For example, access to the pool will be along a gently sloping beach, eliminating the need for ramps and lifts.
Design work and the architectural design of the accompanying building were done by the Hinney Design Group in Saratoga Springs. CLA Site Landscape Architecture, also in Saratoga Springs, did the landscape design. The pool was designed by ADE in Orlando, Fla.
The park owners are still basking in the glow of the observation of their 50th anniversary in 2016, a “great season,” King said.
He particularly enjoyed “walks down memory lane” with visiting families, in some cases, as many as four generations. The season culminated with the award of a trophy as Large Park of the Year from their trade association, the National Association of RV Parks and Campgrounds.
The Lake George facility was chosen from among 6,000 parks in the United States.
