Fort William Henry Hotel Plans To Expand; Will Spend Up To $700,000 This Year Alone

Fort William Henry Hotel and Conference Center in Lake George plans to expand facilities and activities in order to attract visitors all year round and not just the summer season.

Fort William Henry Hotel and Conference Center plans to expand facilities and activities, another step toward in the efforts to make Lake George a year-round tourist destination.
“It is what the whole area is trying to do,” said Kathy Muncil, CEO of the hotel complex, an 18-acre development at the southern end of the lake.
Currently, the hotel and museum are open weekends during the winter months.
“We want to change that,” she said, by introducing more activities that are not weather-dependent. Plans also include installing a distillery, renovation of the four-story carriage house and addition of a fitness center.

Comptroller: Employment In State’s Small Businesses Increased Faster Than U.S. Pace

Employment among New York’s small businesses has increased slightly faster than the national pace, according to a report released today by State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli.
The report, based on the most recent data available from the U.S. Census Bureau, examined the five-year trend from 2011 through 2016.
During that time frame, small business employment rose by 9.2 percent in New York while increasing 8.9 percent across the country. These companies provided more than 4.1 million jobs in the state in 2016, just over half of all private sector jobs in New York. Small businesses provided more than $212 billion in payroll, nearly 40 percent of the total private sector payroll in the state.

James Johnson has joined the Northwestern Mutual Financial Network as the director of planning.
Johnson has been employed by various practices in Northwestern Mutual, most recently as the director of client relations for Tronco Network managing partner Alex Tronco.
He brings financial planning experience, as well as relationship management skills to the practice. He is licensed for both insurance and investments.
Prior to his financial planning career, Johnson was an associate pastor at Grace Bible Church, in Cohoes. He studied theology and psychology at Bob Jones University.

Adirondack Thunder In Playoffs Again, Tickets Are On Sale For Series With Manchester

The Adirondack Thunder has made the ECHL playoffs for the third year in a row and the team has announced the schedule for Round 1 of the 2019 Kelly Cup Playoffs.

The playoffs, presented by SmileDirectClub, will begin on Friday, April 12, at Cool Insuring Arena in downtown Glens Falls. Adirondack will take on the Manchester Monarchs in Round 1 as the Thunder finished in second place in the ECHL’s North Division while the Monarchs came in directly behind them in third.

The Thunder and Monarchs will play a best of seven series in a 2-3-2 format, beginning with Games 1 and 2 at Cool Insuring Arena on Friday, April 12 and Saturday, April 13, with both games dropping the puck at 7 p.m. The series will then shift to SNHU Arena in New Hampshire for Games 3, 4 and 5, occurringon April 17, 19 and 20.

Common Roots Brewing Co. Plans To Rebuild After Fire; Fundraisers Are Helping The Effort

A “Rally for Roots” fundraiser event was held on Sunday, April 7, to help the business rebuild its facility at 58 Saratoga Ave. in South Glens Falls. The event was held at the Queensbury Hotel.

Common Roots Brewing Co., whose brewery burned down in a March 25 fire, is already planning to rebuild and has been getting assistance from the community and other craft brew manufacturers.
Supporters of the South Glens Falls business went to the Queensbury Hotel on Sunday, April 7, for a “Rally for Roots” event to help raise money.
The fundraiser featured locally made beer, live music, raffles and silent auctions. The project also has a GoFundMe fundraising page.

Convention & Visitors Bureau Helps Spur Tourism By Bringing Sporting Events To Area

The Lake George Regional Convention & Visitors Bureau continues to see growth in the sports tourism market.
The Lake George Regional CVB, a division of the Lake George Regional Chamber of Commerce, has funding supplied through occupancy tax dollars with the goal of realizing a return on that promotional money in the form of weather-proof year round business in the form of meetings, conventions, sports tournaments and other events.
This year, officials said the Lake George Area has netted three awards for sports tourism including:
• The 2019 SportsEvents magazine’s Readers Choice Award. The bureau has won this award twice in the last three years. SportsEvents asks readers annually to nominate events, planners and locations for the award. Voting is done on online ballot.

The Adirondack Regional Chamber of Commerce will kick-off of the ARCC women’s business council with a meeting 7:30-8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 30, at Rachel’s Spice Cafe & Co., 240 Warren St., Glens Falls.
The purpose of the council is to promote the affinity group of women-owned businesses, sole proprietorships, and women professional members of the ARCC to encourage increased business and collaboration among its ranks.
This is an introductory/informational meeting for women to attend and learn more about the council.

David O’Rourke Becomes New President And CEO Of The New York Racing Association

The New York Racing Association (NYRA) board of directors has unanimously appointed David O’Rourke as NYRA CEO and president.
O’Rourke had been serving as interim CEO since Jan. 23 following the resignation of Chris Kay.
“David has made significant and lasting contributions to NYRA since he joined the organization more than a decade ago,” said NYRA board chairman Michael Del Giudice. “He possesses broad expertise in nearly every facet of the industry, enjoys deep respect among his NYRA colleagues and industry peers, and understands how the sport and the business will continue to evolve in the future. His combination of skills and obvious leadership ability made this an easy choice and we congratulate David on this appointment.”
