The annual New York State High School Basketball Tournament is coming to the Glens Falls Civic Center on March 14.
The Adirondack Regional Chamber of Commerce will again serve as a host for the thousands of players and spectators to the popular event, by providing a welcome booth in the lobby of the Civic Center throughout the three-day tournament.
“Throughout the decades, the basketball tournament has had a significant impact on the local economy and we anticipate an influx of new business again this year,” said Peter Aust, ARCC president and CEO.
“Simply stated, the hundreds of motel rooms from Clifton Park to Warrensburg rented for the weekend, the packed restaurants in the greater Lake George/Glens Falls area and the downtown Glens Falls businesses seeing tremendous foot traffic from Friday to Sunday, the local economy is a big winner.”
“Add to that the expenses required to host this comprehensive event leading up to the weekend and its easy see the NYSPHSAA tournament makes a measurable impact on our local business community and keeps some businesses afloat in the lean off-season.” The tournament is presented by American Dairy Association and Dairy Council.
At the booth, volunteers will be providing information on the community and about Chamber members to the out-of -area spectators.
Chamber officials noted that historically, the tournament “is an excellent opportunity for our hospitality members in particular to provide information on their hotel, motel, restaurant, recreational activity, etc. to these folks.”
The ARCC asked area businesses to provide materials about their business for display and distribution at the welcome center. Those include items such as brochures, menus, rate cards and other pertinent information.
The ARCC also organized volunteers to work shifts at the welcome booth, serving as ambassadors to the area, providing brochures and information about places to eat, places to stay, fun activities to do and general overall information.
The welcome booth will be open Friday, March 14, through Sunday, March 16, 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.
The first round of play opens at 10 a.m. Friday, March 14. Games will take place throughout that day and into the evening. The last contest of the night will begin at 8:30 p.m.
On Saturday, March 15, games begin at 9 a.m. and continue throughout the day and into the evening. The last game of the day tips off at 9 p.m.
Saturdays matches feature semi-final contests for the Class AA and Class A schools during the day, as well as championship finals for Class B, Class C and Class D in the evening games.
On Sunday, the Civic Center hosts the Class A championship at 1:30 p.m. and the Class AA championship game at 3:15 p.m., drawing the tournament weekend to a close.
