Charles A. Guerin, director of The Hyde
museum in Glens Falls, is leaving the position
on May 1. The museum’s board of directors is
embarking on a search to fill the position.
Guerin has accepted a new position as executive
director of the Biggs Museum of American
Art in Dover, Del.
“Charles’ decision was unanticipated but
eminently understandable,” said TenĂ©e Rehm
Casaccio, chairwoman of the Hyde’s board of
trustees. “The move to Delaware presents an
opportunity for Charles and his wife Katherine to
be much closer to family members in Maryland.
We are grateful to Charles for his leadership and
service, and we wish the Guerins all the best as
they embark on new adventures.”
Guerin joined the Hyde two years ago and has
been instrumental in expanding its permanent
collection through major gifts of art, including an
extensive collection of modern American art; a
major collection of American photography, and
a collection of 19th century French etchings,
engravings, lithographs, woodcuts and books.
Casaccio said he championed the Hyde’s efforts
to reach out in service to the community, with
programs focused on children, families and senior citizens.
“I have enjoyed my time at The Hyde Collection,
working with its extraordinary staff,
dedicated board and outstanding volunteers,”
Guerin said. “The Hyde is a gem of an institution
and I am honored to have been its director
and to have made a contribution to its success.
I will miss the congenial atmosphere of its
historic surroundings, and its truly remarkable
collections. Glens Falls and Queensbury have a
priceless asset in the Hyde Collection, an asset
that helps make this community such a unique
and special place.”
The Hyde Collection is one of the Northeast’s
preeminent small art museums with a distinguished
collection of European and American
art. Its permanent collection spans centuries and
includes works by Rembrandt, Rubens, Degas,
Seurat, Picasso, Renoir, Botticelli, El Greco and
Tiepolo as well as major American artists including
Eakins, Hassam, Homer, Peto, Ryder, Vedder
and Whistler. The Hyde Collection presents major
changing exhibitions in its two galleries, as well
as lectures, cultural events, family activities, and
school and outreach programming in its historic
house at 161 Warren St., Glens Falls.
