George’s Restaurant in Lake George is now
re-opened for business, rebounding after a
fire in 2014 forced closure for the last year.
It was April 15, 2014, when operating
partner Ted Bearor reviewed his to-do list
for the opening of the seasonal restaurant.
The staff was hired and trained, the menus
updated, minor cosmetic enhancements
and organization completed and technology
systems improved. He was confident it was
going to be a strong season. Then he was
awoken by a 2 a.m. phone call. An electrical
fire had damaged the restaurant’s kitchen.
Initially, Bearor hoped to reopen later
in the summer. But an engineer’s report
revealed the damage was more substantial
than anticipated, sinking any hopes of a
2014 opening.
“To say it was a difficult time would be
a major understatement. We had put in so
much preparation, and we felt like we were
well positioned for a great summer,” said
Bearor, who was entering his second year as
operating partner. “It actually took a couple
of weeks to sink in. But once we were able
to assess the situation, we committed with
resolve to come back better than ever.”
After a soft opening last night for friends,
family and supporters, George’s Restaurant
officially opened for the 2015 season on
May 28.
Restaurant hours will be 4:30 p.m. to 9
p.m., seven days a week, through Labor Day
weekend. The “early bird special” menu will
remain available between 4:30 p.m. and 6
p.m.
“Customers will definitely see some changes to the restaurant,” Bearor said of the
construction project. “We’ve modernized and
expanded the kitchen and have relocated
and enhanced the salad bar, which has long
been a customer favorite. We have added two
house-made soups and wanted it to be more
of a feature than ever before. But we’re still
George’s, from the chandeliers and mirrors to
the menu. We have been and will always be a
uniquely Adirondack restaurant experience.”
George’s menu is marked by three distinct
categories: From the Butcher’s Block, which
features George’s prime rib, steak and baby
back ribs; From the Sea, with dishes ranging
from broiled haddock to bronzed fresh sea
scallops, king crab and lobster; and From
the Farm and Garden, a selection of poultry,
pasta and vegetables, including items like
chicken penne a la vodka, parmesan, duck,
and vegetable napoleon.
George’s also offers an appetizer menu
that features a daily raw bar with oysters,
crab claws, chilled shrimp and clams. The
dessert menu, as well as an after dinner coffee
drink menu, features classic confections
like cheesecake and tiramisu.
George’s beverage menu showcases handcrafted
cocktails, signature specialty martinis,
a well-rounded wine selection and local
New York state craft beer on tap.
George’s is located on the east side of Lake
George on Route 9L. Ample free parking
available. Reservations are recommended
for parties six or more. The phone number
is 668-5482.
