David Wornall and Jim Hume are creating
Battle Hill Brewing Co. in Fort Ann with the
help of a long list of other people and organizations,
including the Adirondack Regional
Chamber of Commerce, volunteers from
SCORE, Senior Corps of Retired Executives,
and plenty of local kibitzers.
“Everyone was just great,” Wornall said.
The brew pub, at 4C Charles St. (Route 4),
overlooks the Revolutionary War battle site
for which it is named. They planned to begin
brewing and hope to open by the end of July.
The decor will reflect the history of the
area, particularly the battle of Fort Ann. The
six beers on the initial brew list will bear
names like Grains of Liberty, an all-grain ale;
Burgoyne, a red ale; and War Whoop.
All the beers will be brewed on site,
Wornall said. In addition, the pub will offer
New York state cider and wines. The food
selections with promote local agriculture.
Initially, there will not be a kitchen but local
vendors or food trucks may be invited in
on weekends.
Both Hume, who will be the head brewer,
and Wornall are amateur brewers. This is
their first commercial venture. Hume has
worked as a chef and Wornall worked at a distribution
center. The plan is to “keep it small
and local,” at least at first, Wornall said. The
expect to do all the work themselves.
To start, there will be a taproom with eight
tables, seating 32 people, and beer sold by
the growler for home consumption. There is
seating on the deck with, Wornall promises,
“beautiful views.” Later, they may sell beer
by the keg. There is also room to expand the
seating capacity.
