After a two-year hiatus due to COVID, the 2022 Adirondack Wine & Food Festival returned in June. Organizers said more than 6,800 people attended.

Officials estimated the event had a $4.1 million economic impact on the Greater Lake George Region.

The festival was held Saturday, June 25, and Sunday, June 26, at Charles R. Wood Festival Commons in the Village of Lake George.

The sixth-annual event sold out with over 4,000 attendees on Saturday, despite a weekend of unusually high temperatures.

“After two years off due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we weren’t sure what to expect; so we were thrilled when we sold out Saturday before the weekend hit, especially considering the 90 plus degree temps we had,” said Sasha Pardy, festival owner and co-owner of the Adirondack Winery in Lake George.

“I am so proud of the impact this event has on the economy of the Lake George region and our small family-owned producer vendors. I am looking forward to doing it bigger and better yet again next year,” she said.

SEFCU and the SUNY Albany’s Small Business Development Center, School of Business and School of Social Welfare have partnered in a program to provide loans of up to $35,000 for start-up and expanding businesses in the Capital Region.

The SEED Program was developed to provide future and current entrepreneurs with capital to start/expand their business.

In order to participate in the program and be eligible for funding, the applicant and/or business must be located in Albany, Rensselaer, Schenectady, Saratoga, Warren, Washington, Schoharie, Fulton, Montgomery, Columbia or Greene counties.

The Center for Economic Growth (CEG) said selection for participation in the program and loan awards is based on the overall business concept and the character of the applicant.

TAP Expanded To Help Part-Time Students

Posted onSeptember 19, 2022

New York state has launched a $150 million expansion of its Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) that will provide funding to students pursuing their college degree part-time.

The plan is part of a broader push to invest in public higher education and improve access and affordability for every student.

In 2020-2021, part-time learners comprised 63.5 percent of SUNY Empire’s undergraduate student population, officials said. The TAP expansion provides an additional financial aid option to help alleviate the financial burden for SUNY Empire’s diverse student population, many of whom balance college, work, families, and other responsibilities.

The expansion applies to part-time students enrolled in six or more credit hours.

Part-time students also may be eligible for Aid for Part Time Study (APTS), which provides funding to students enrolled in 3-11 credit hours.

SUNY Empire students enrolling for the Fall 2022 semester can apply for TAP by filling out the federal FAFSA application. TAP awards for students who have already submitted a FAFSA for the 2022-2023 academic year will automatically be adjusted based on number of enrolled credits.

“I want to do more than just care for this state today,” said Gov. Kathy Hochul. “I want to prepare New York for tomorrow. Higher education students not only hold the key for our state, but for their families. A degree changes more than just the life of its holder, it changes the lives of those all around them. Every person who calls New York home should have the opportunity to better themselves and invest in their education.”

SUNY Empire State President Lisa Vollendorf said the college “has been committed to increasing access to higher education by removing barriers to student success. Gov. Hochul’s expansion of New York’s Tuition Assistance Program to include part-time learners helps us further those efforts in service to our diverse and unique student population, the vast majority of whom are earning their degree part time as they juggle personal and professional demands and responsibilities.”

Hallwear, a company producing screen-printed and embroidered clothing and novelties, settled into new permanent quarters at 76 Lawrence St. in Glens Falls.

They had a soft opening in August and formally cut the ribbon at the new location Sept. 1.

The company has been in business for 26 years, 20 at the same location. They were forced to move from their long-time home when a fire in a nearby apartment caused extensive smoke damage and some minor dismantling of their shop.

“We got lucky. We were able to save a lot of items,” said Kevin Hall, second generation owner of the business. Before moving out, they held a fire sale at the old location.

The business took up temporary quarters at the Shirt Factory for about a month while looking for a permanent site. The business was interrupted “very little” as they moved into the busy fall season, Hall said.

The company’s customers include area schools and sports teams. Hall said even businesses not on a school schedule seem to like to order in the fall.

The multi-year project to repair and upgrade critical water infrastructure on Lake George that officials said is crucial to protecting the long-term health of the lake is complete, state officials announced.

New York state invested nearly $15 million in the state-of-the-art improvements to the village of Lake George’s wastewater treatment plant that will significantly reduce the amount of pollution that enters the lake and create lasting environmental and economic benefits for the region.

“New York state is committed to working with our local communities to safeguard the quality of our lakes throughout the state, making record investments to protect public health and the environment,” Gov. Kathy Hochul said. “Lake George serves as one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Northeast and a beloved location for family vacations, sustaining annual traditions that span generations.

“The critical upgrades made to the village’s wastewater treatment plant will protect the future of this majestic water body while promoting economic growth and tourism throughout the region.”

Lake George is one of New York’s most popular tourist destinations. Nicknamed the “Queen of American Lakes”, the 28,160-acre water body located in the southeast corner of the Adirondacks that has served as a major tourism destination since the Revolutionary War era. Lake George residents and visitors take advantage of the myriad opportunities for outdoor and aquatic recreation in the region.

Fish307.Com Owner Moving Business From Route 149 To Larger Goggins Road Site

Posted onSeptember 19, 2022
Jeff Goldberg, owner and operator of Fish307.com, says the company has outgrown the space they are currently in and is movin to a large building on Goggins Road in Lake George.

After 30 years in business, Fish307.com is relocating to a larger facility in Lake George.

The store is moving to 814 Goggins Road in Lake George, the old location of the Adirondack Mountain Club right off Northway Exit 21.

Jeff Goldberg, owner and operator, said the company has simply outgrown the space they are currently in, located at 6 Route 149  at the end of the Million Dollar Mile near the outlets. As the brick-and-mortar business has grown and the online ecommerce site has expanded, the space is no longer large enough.

“I didn’t have any intention of moving. In fact, I really want to retire. My people came to me and said, ‘Look, this building is for sale’. It was the perfect location and a nice building. So I said, ‘Well, I guess I’m not gonna retire any time soon’,” he said.

The building on Goggins Road is being renovated, with ceilings removed and raised, walls removed, bathrooms being brought up to ADA compliance and space in general being opened up. The back wall was moved 16 feet into the warehouse, creating a 3,500-square-foot showroom. Because the building is on 4.5 acres, Fish307.com can expand in the future without having to move again.

Goldberg anticipates being able to open doors for business by the end of September. The original location is still open and operating.

SUNY Empire State Partners With Amazon To Help Its Employees Learn New Work Skills

Posted onSeptember 19, 2022

SUNY Empire State College has been accepted as a premier member into the Amazon Career Choice program, an education benefit that empowers Amazon employees to learn new skills for career success at Amazon or elsewhere.

SUNY Empire is the first institution within the SUNY system to partner with the Amazon Career Choice program.

Officials said partnership with SUNY Empire will make it more convenient for Amazon’s hourly employees to earn their undergraduate degree online, in person at SUNY Empire locations, at Amazon Career Choice classrooms located across New York state, or a combination of all three.

Through its Career Choice program, Amazon provides funding for employees’ tuition, books, and fees with no lifetime limit on participating.

SUNY Empire and Amazon are collaborating to hold fall information sessions for Amazon employees across New York state, beginning with the company’s two Staten Island distribution centers, as well as distribution centers in Albany and Buffalo. The goal is to eventually expand the partnership to eligible employees in Connecticut, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Vermont.

The college will also begin offering college courses on site at Amazon’s Career Choice Classrooms in Staten Island and Albany in the spring of 2023. In the U.S. alone, the company is investing $1.2 billion to upskill more than 300,000 Amazon employees by 2025 to help move them into higher-paying, in-demand jobs.

SUNY Empire was selected to Amazon’s Career Choice program, in part, because of its unique position within the SUNY system as a pioneer and leading provider of online and hybrid education and supports for working adults. The college is also a national leader in prior learning assessment (PLA), evaluating and granting college credit for relevant prior work and life experience.
