Communication Is Key To Team Building, Which Is Important For Success Of A Business

Posted onMay 12, 2017May 12, 2017
Michael Cruz of Lighthouse Advisors LLC helps businesses develop winning strategies.

By Jennifer Farnsworth

Despite living in an age with so many types of communication, more and more businesses are looking to professionals to help them zero in on making communication more effective in the workplace.

Many business advisors say if communications are made a top priority, success will be that much more obtainable.

Leslie Kendall of Kendall & Associates Organization Development in Queensbury, said with communication comes the importance of team building. She said the process of team building  is not difficult, it just takes commitment.

Michael Cruz of Lighthouse Advisors LLC in Queensbury said the best advice he gives to companies looking to improve communication is to simply be honest. He said many organizations make the mistake of talking around issues. He said they have to be able to communicate by talking directly to people instead of talking around them.

“Figure out your goals and what each person’s contribution is. You are all in this together,” he said.

Kendall said she helps organizations develop a path to success by developing a list of what their priorities are. This is done through using proven problem-solving methods that identify and prioritize potential obstacles. Her company provides workshops in grant writing, proposal development, team building, and working through changes in management.

Business Report: Develop Into Being A Good Manager

By Rose Miller

Congratulations. You’ve been promoted to a management role. It’s a big job with important responsibilities. But wait. Just how much do you know about being a good manager?

I remember what my wise dad told me. He was an amazing carpenter, who said he was only as good as his tools. Do you have the right tools to manage others? Here’s a little test. How many statements are true?

Your success as a supervisor depends more on your technical knowledge than on people skills. You should delegate only tasks you don’t have time to do yourself. To get the best results, promote competition rather than teamwork.

All those statements are false. Management by definition is the ability to get things done through the efforts of others. A good manager does this by empowering and motivating others. They lead teams to work together towards a common goal.

Here are seven basic tips that can help you make the successful transition from employee to manager:

1. Empower employees to feel they are responsible for their own performance.

2. Use an employee’s personal drivers to fuel their achievement.

Stewart’s Shops Will Build Several New Stores Designed To Meet Changing Customers’ Needs

Posted onMay 12, 2017May 12, 2017

By Margaret Macdonald

Stewart’s Shops has plans to replace several existing shops in the area with larger, more accessible venues.

Generally, these new shops enable better indoor flow to improve customers’ shopping experience and expand food service options, according to Maria D’Amelia, public relations specialist for the company.

New construction includes a shop at Route 28 and Durkin Road in North Creek. The company is seeking site plan approvals. Construction start is anticipated in June and could be completed in October.

Another new shop is planned at 977 Route 149 in Queensbury. The company is seeking site plan approvals and construction is expected to start in the second quarter of 2018. The proposal is for a 3,695-square-foot store with a canopy that will have four islands for pumping gas.

Other shops being replaced include two locations on Route 146 in Clifton Park, one starting in late July with completion anticipated around Labor Day. Construction of the second is expected to begin in September.

Construction of a store on Route 67, Charlton, could be completed in late September. Construction of a shop on Saratoga Avenue in South Glens Falls is expected to begin this summer. Another on Broad Street in Schuylerville is awaiting approvals.

Argyle Brewing Co. Opens Second Taproom At Former Train Depot Building In Cambridge

Posted onMay 12, 2017May 18, 2017
This crowd gathered at the new taproom opened by the Argyle Brewing Co. on May 6 at the former railroad train depot building in Cambridge. It is the brewery’s second taproom.

By Jennifer Farnsworth

Matt Stewart and his business partners Chris Castrio and Rich Thomas are continuing their quest to make “farm-to-glass” beer something that more and more people can enjoy.

They just opened their second Argyle Brewing Co. taproom in May at the former Cambridge train depot, 6 Broad St., Cambridge. Stewart said the character of the station was an instant selling point for him. He also has a sentimental tie to the spot.

“I was married in the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania in Strasburg, Lancaster County, so I took it as a sign,” said Stewart.

The location is part of a partnership with Hubbard Hall, who Stewart said approached him and his partners with the idea. He said they weren’t quite ready to open a second location, but they fell in love with the character of the space and thought it would be perfect.

He said they hope to eventually have five locations. Cambridge is the second. The other is in Greenwich at 1 Main St.

“At first our heads were spinning, but it’s been good. It ended up being good timing,” said Stewart.

The 2,000-square-foot Cambridge spot can seat up to 67 people inside and 56 outside. Despite the new location being larger than the Greenwich location, all of the processing part of the brewery is done in Greenwich. They have seven ales and two ciders on tap in Cambridge, all with a flavor that Stewart said is unique to the area.

Route 4 Bridge Replacement Continues, Part Of DOT Design-Build Bridge Replacement Plan

Posted onMay 12, 2017May 12, 2017

Work has resumed on a project to replace the Route 4 (Main Street) bridge over the Glens Falls Feeder Canal in the village of Hudson Falls.

The existing Route 4 Bridge was built in 1931 and carries approximately 9,400 motor vehicles per day, New York state officials said. The project, scheduled to be substantially completed this fall, is part of Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s $542 million Empire Bridge program.

The Empire Bridge program, administered by the state Department of Transportation, is replacing 100 aging bridge structures across the state. Officials said the new bridges will be more resilient and better able to withstand flooding.

“Our foremost concern is safety for motorists and pedestrians and this new bridge will help assure that,” said state Sen. Betty Little. “Representing a region heavily dependent on tourism, I know too that first impressions count. The quality and appearance of our infrastructure adds to the overall experience for visitors who we want to come back again and again, so this kind of investment helps.”

Traffic has been maintained on Route 4 in both directions during construction, which began last year and is being conducted in phases, with one half of the bridge being replaced at a time. The southbound side of the bridge was replaced in 2016. While the northbound side of the bridge is replaced this year, traffic in both directions will use the newly replaced southbound side.

Pedestrians and bicyclists will use a temporary bridge installed in November, just west of the Main Street Bridge.

The work is part of a $20.7 million design-build contract to replace five bridges. DOT officials said design-build allows for the combining of design and construction services into single contracts to help expedite work to vital infrastructure to save taxpayer money.

Foothills Builders Has Plans To Construct A Mixed-Use Structure In South Glens Falls

Posted onMay 12, 2017May 12, 2017

By Jennifer Farnsworth

A parcel on Saratoga Avenue in South Glens Falls will be the site of a two-story mixed use building that will include two apartments and commercial space.

Construction is expected to start this fall or early winter, said Joe Leuci of Foothills Builders in Queensbury.

Leuci said  he jumped on the opportunity because of its good location. The project is still awaiting its final approval from the village.

“It’s in a spot that sees a lot of traffic,” said Leuci.

Leuci said in addition to the steady traffic, another positive is the availability of on-street and off-street parking.

“Business always want to have ample parking, and this has it, “ said Leucci.

Three-Story, 27-Unit Apartment Building Is Planned In Queensbury By Valente Builders

Posted onMay 12, 2017May 12, 2017

By Margaret Macdonald

Valente Builders Inc. of Hudson Falls is working on construction of a three-story, 27-unit apartment complex for senior citizens on Bay Road in Queensbury.

Apartments will vary between 1-3 bedroom units, according to Daniel Valente.

He said amenities will include a community garden, an outside area for recreation, a fire pit and walking paths within the subdivision, enabling seniors to walk without being on the main road. They will also be able to otherwise congregate and foster community.

Valente, recently retired from the company, where he served as president said that there’s a real need for “in-between, transient homes” for snowbirds during the warmer months, with a maintenance-free living style. It is a particular need  in the Lake George and Queensbury area.

“It’s a great place to get away from the hustle and bustle down south. It’s not far from Saratoga,” Valente said.

The site plan is designed and construction is expected to begin soon.

Adirondack Trust Co. Honored For Offering Financial Literacy Courses To Area Students

Posted onMay 12, 2017May 12, 2017

The Adirondack Trust Co. was honored at the third annual Financial Capability Innovation Awards presented by a leading technology innovator, EverFi Inc.

Presented at Nasdaq Marketsite in New York City, the award recognizes the company’s “significant efforts to improve the financial capability of local teenagers through unique online learning initiatives,” officials said in a new release.

Adirondack Trust has partnered with EverFi to bring the EverFi and Vault Financial Literacy Courses to local students at no cost to schools or taxpayers and has reached over 2,000 students since the 2014-2015 school year. The web-based program uses the latest in simulation and gaming technologies to bring complex financial concepts to life for today’s digital generation, officials said.

Charles V. Wait Jr., bank executive vice president, said the company “is honored to receive the Financial Capability Innovation Award from EverFi and Nasdaq. As a community bank, we feel it is important to encourage students in our local communities to learn about financial education and we are proud to be able to provide it through the EverFi program.”

He said he is committed to providing students with the skills and knowledge needed to successfully navigate the increasingly complex financial world.

“Each year, we travel to the birthplace of the American financial system to honor institutions that are truly dedicated to going above and beyond in service to their communities,” said Ray Martinez, EverFi President of Financial Education. “The Financial Capability Innovation Awards have given us the opportunity to share and celebrate the tremendous investment these institutions are making and continue to make in the communities where they live, work, and serve. For EverFi, our time here reminds us just how critical the role innovation continues to play in empowering Americans to pursue economic opportunity and achieve financial security for themselves, their families, and their community.”

United Way Plans A Unique Fundraising Event: Rappeling Down Queensbury Hotel

By Susan E. Campbell

A unique fundraising event promises to jump-start Tri-County United Way’s new fiscal year and help dozens of worthy agencies receive the financial assistance they need.

“We are going over the edge,” said Duane J. Vaughn, executive director of the United Way office that has served Warren, Washington and northern Saratoga counties since 1923.

She meant, literally, over the edge of the five-story Queensbury Hotel. Tri-County United Way has partnered with Over The Edge, a company out of Canada that has raised $50 million for nonprofit agencies since its inception by helping brave volunteers rappel down the side of a building—scaling down the building using a special rope setup. Professionals guide participants through the entire rappel, and Over the Edge adheres to strict guidelines set by experts in the industry;

“This fundraiser works like a walk-a-thon or road race where participants collect pledges from their own pools of friends and family,” Vaughn said.

Because the participants raise the money rather than the nonprofit organization itself, Vaughn hopes to reduce “donor fatigue.”

“Ours is a very giving community and donors are very important to us,” he said. “We are always looking to find ways to lessen their burden.”

Adirondack Health Institute Establishes Task Force Aimed At Reducing All Uses Of Tobacco

Posted onMay 12, 2017May 12, 2017

In response to the continued high prevalence of tobacco use in the region, the North Country Population Health Improvement Program (NC PHIP) of the Glens Falls-based Adirondack Health Institute has established the North Country Tobacco Use Reduction Task Force.

The task force, comprised of individuals and organizations committed to improving the health of North Country communities in six counties, will promote strategies to reduce the use of all forms of tobacco products throughout the region via a new initiative, “It’s Time to Clear the Air in the North Country,” according to organizers.

AHI officials said state Department of Health figures indicate that in 2014:

• More than 22 percent of adults 18 years of age and older in the North Country were cigarette smokers compared to 15 percent of adults in all of the state.

• The percentage of adult cigarette smokers in each county in the North Country exceeded the state percentage.

• North Country young adults (ages 18 to 24) smoked cigarettes at a significantly higher percentage than all New Yorkers in that age range (21 percent compared to 13 percent).

• More than one quarter of males ages 18 to 24 in the North Country smoked cigarettes in 2014.
