Scott Smith, owner of Adirondack Skydiving
Adventures in Fort Ann, found a passion for skydiving
by way of a fear of heights.
“A friend and I had been discussing how we were
afraid of heights while watching T.V. one day and
coincidentally, the next commercial that came on
was for skydiving. We both looked at each other and
said ‘We’ve got to do this,'” said Smith.
That was in 1998. Three days later they made
their first jump and Smith was hooked.
guitars for money to take lessons and become a licensed
skydiver,” said Smith, who is also a musician.
“We see all kinds of tandem jumpers – from fearless 18 year-olds to people in their 90s wanting to cross skydiving off their ‘bucket list,'” said Smith. He said some clients who “really get the bug” for jumping become licensed themselves to become steady jumpers.
Smith is a multi-rated instructor which means he can offer other jumps in addition to tandem jumping. One popular experience is the static line, a jump that is similar to those performed in the military that involves six hours of training and allows the jumper more control over their parachute. While preparing to jump from 10,000 feet out of an airplane moving 90 miles per hour may cause some to second-guess their decision, Smith said he has never had anyone back out.
“People come to us ready and excited to jump. And everyone always says it’s the most incredible thing they’ve ever done,” said Smith.
Smith said what sets his drop zone’apart is a visual that is second to none. Skydivers are treated to stunning views of Lake George and the high peaks, and on a clear day, they can see as far as Lake Champlain. Jumpers can also choose a video and stills package that will capture their experience. “I love seeing the excitement and passion for skydiving in the faces of new people doing their first jump,” said Smith.
Smith offers tours of the airspace to those who haven’t yet made up their minds. Guests can chose to take a scenic tour by helicopter or airplane. He said spectators are welcome to watch jumps and the impressive aircraft that fly in and out of Harris Airport.
“We’re not just skydiving,” says Smith, “we’re a complete aviation fun park.”
The cost of a tandem jump at Adirondack Skydiving Adventures is $255 cash or $265 credit. For more information or to book a jump, visit adkskydiving. com or call 791-8237.
