The Double H Ranch in Lake Luzerne is celebrating 25 years of providing year-round outdoor Adirondack adventures for children with life-threatening and serious illness, free of charge.
For the past 25 years the Double H Ranch has restored the joy of childhood to over 60,000 children who, due to the seriousness of their illness, are typically precluded from participating in the deserved experiences of growing up.
The Double H Ranch plans to celebrate this special milestone throughout 2017.
It was founded by the late businessman and philanthropist Charles R. Wood and the late actor and philanthropist Paul Newman.
Children come to the facility with cancer, sickle cell anemia, hemophilia/serious blood disorders, neuromuscular impairments; HIV immune disorders, collagen vascular disease, inflammatory bowel disease and mitochondrial disorders. They participate in horseback riding, swimming, arts and crafts, high ropes course, skiing and snowboarding.
In doing so, they develop friendships, confidence, and learn how to manage medical challenges.
“The stories that are shared with us about the importance of our mission from parents and children are a testament to the services we have provided for over 60,000 children,” said Max Yurenda, the ranch’s CEO who has been with the camp since its beginning. “We cannot thank the community enough for embracing our mission and providing the financial sustainability that allows us to operate at the highest standards of care.”
