Adirondack Health Institute’s New Network Addresses Social Factors That Impact Health

Posted onNovember 15, 2018November 15, 2018

Adirondack Health Institute (AHI), in collaboration with numerous community, social service, public sector, and health care provider organizations, has launched ADK Wellness Connections, a powerful, centrally-connected resource navigation and referral coordination network.

ADK Wellness Connections aims to improve access to care and services to address unmet social and health-related needs for individuals and families in the greater Adirondack region. It is part of a larger effort to increase collaboration and interoperability between clinical and social service providers, under the state Department of Health Delivery System Reform Incentive Payment (DSRIP) program. A five-year program beginning in 2015, DSRIP was intended to transform care delivery to individuals who receive Medicaid with the goals of reducing avoidable hospital use, increasing access to primary and preventative care, and improving population health outcomes.

Addressing social factors that impact health outcomes, such as housing, transportation, and access to nutritious food, has proven to be a key consideration in DSRIP initiatives.

ADK Wellness Connections utilizes Unite Us, a secure, HIPAA-compliant software platform, to support referral coordination, resource navigation, and the collection of social determinants of health outcomes data among network partners in Clinton, Essex, Franklin, Fulton, Hamilton, Saratoga, St. Lawrence, Warren, and Washington counties.

AARP Study: Those That Travel Improve Emotional, Physical Health, Job Productivity

Posted onNovember 15, 2018November 15, 2018
An AARP study says those who travel report better emotional and physical health.

AARP Travel released in October the results of its latest study, examining the health and wellness benefits of leisure travel.

According to the survey, those who travel reported better emotional and physical health and improved relationships and productivity at work. Additionally, overall well-being is one of the biggest advantages of travel, with the benefits starting during the initial travel planning phase and extending well beyond the trip, the study said. The longest lasting travel benefit reported is improved relationships with loved ones, lasting six weeks on average.

The study shows four of five baby boomers experience at least one health benefit during a trip and 73 percent notice at least one health benefit post trip. By far, boomers get the most health benefits during the trip (56 percent). One in five indicate they experience health benefits before, during, and after the trip equally. Millennials experience a far bigger benefit from planning a trip (23 percent) than Boomers (6 percent).

“This research shows there are many health and wellness benefits during all stages of travel across generations, and seeing those benefits significantly improves their satisfaction with the trip,” said Alison Bryant, AARP research senior vice president. “Any type of travel, whether it’s a weekend getaway or a week-long trip, can be an effective way to renew and recharge and the benefits far outweigh the short-lived drawbacks.”

Business Report: Fear Factors In Elder Care Planning

Posted onNovember 15, 2018November 15, 2018
Debra Verni, principal of the Herzog Law Firm in Saratoga Springs.

By Debra Verni, Esq.

The fear of many elderly individuals — perhaps even yourself or someone in your family — is that nursing home costs will consume their life savings before they can be passed to their heirs. This concern is real and has spawned elder care planning strategies designed to minimize the damage.

Background: Medicaid is a health care assistance program for elderly, blind, and disabled people in financial need. It covers nursing home costs, but it’s not easy to qualify for assistance. Generally speaking, an individual may own only a few assets—a car, certain personal belongings, a small amount of savings—and have a minimal income stream. The exact amounts are established by individual states. Since these standards are often unattainable, the assets of a nursing home resident may be exhausted by fees before becoming eligible for Medicaid.

Therefore, one typical objective of elder care planning is to “spend down” below the state Medicaid limits to qualify for assistance.

Traditionally, this has been accomplished through direct gifts made to other family members or by transferring assets to a trust that provides minimal payouts. However, there’s yet another hurdle: The Medicaid “look-back rules.”

The town of Lake George became the first municipality in North America to earn the Sustainable Winter Management (SWiMTM) program certification for employing best practices in maintaining safe winter driving conditions while reducing the use of road salt.

The FUND for Lake George has identified road salt runoff as one of the greatest threats to the water quality of Lake George and other area waterways, and is coordinating a multi-year salt-reduction effort among the municipalities in the Lake George basin with a goal of reducing road salt usage by 50 percent by 2020.

FUND officials said the town of Lake George has been the leader among those municipalities in implementing best practices, reducing its road salt usage by more than 30 percent over the past two years and earning it the SWiMTM certification, which is administered by winter management consulting firm WIT Advisers LLC of Delanson.

Gore Mountain was a hub of construction activity over the summer. It involved three separate projects, all designed to enhance skiers’ enjoyment t the facility, both indoors and outdoors.

When everything is complete, a total of $12.5 million will have been spent on expanding the Tannery Bar and Restaurant on the Base Lodge’s upper level, with an expansion of the locker areas and the Mountain Adventure kid’s ski school program.

On the slopes, a new pump house, automated snow-making equipment and a widening of one of the more popular beginner/intermediate trails will be completed before the snow flies.

According to Gore Mountain’s General Manager Bone Bayse, a total of 8,000 square feet has been added to the Base Lodge. Some 4,000 square feet on the upper level in the Tannery will result in an additional 240 seats in the full-service bar and restaurant. Directly below, the other 4,000 square feet will mean an increase of 150 lockers for skiers to store gear, as well as creating a new home for the ski school program.

A new Adirondack Welcome Center rest area that the state is calling state-of-the-art opened in September on the Northbound side of the Northway, between exits 17 and 18 in Queensbury.

The 8,615-square-foot center cost $16.2 million and is located on a 22-acre lot, just over the Saratoga County line between the Hudson River and Exit 18.

The facility is a comfortable, modern gateway to the Adirondacks region, promoting local attractions and providing a family-friendly respite for travelers heading into New York state’s six-million-acre Adirondack Park, the largest publicly protected park in the contiguous United States.

“You have one chance to make a great first impression, which for a tourism region like ours is so important,” said state Sen. Betty Little. “This new and much more appealing rest area is fitting of the region’s hospitality.  It is welcoming and informational and accommodating. For many years, the rest area has been in need of major improvement. This new Welcome Center far exceeds what I and others envisioned but it does a much better job reflecting what we’re about and all we have to offer.”

The new center features an Adirondacks Walk of Fame leading to a new, 8,615 square-foot, LEED certifiable building the state said is  more than four times the size of the buildings that serviced the rest area for decades.
