Tiki Tours is a new boat touring business on Lake George.

Greg Teresi, an owner of the company, said he and his staff were spending an hour or two a day in early June fielding inquires and booking tours. The first tour went off June 8.

He anticipates running two tours a day, each Thursday through Sunday in June, and expanding to a seven-day-a-week service in July.

The boat, decorated like a small Tiki lounge, measure 15.5 feet and by 16.5 feet and is powered by a 30-horsepower, outboard engine. The boat has an octagonal frame,  a thatched roof and bar stools and is built with 20 55-gallon drums underneath.

A boat can accommodate six passengers. It is manned by a captain and a deckhand.

There are few amenities: an ice chest and ice, a portable toilet with a privacy shield, and a radio equipped with blue tooth technology, Teresi said.

It is a slow cruise, moving at about 5 miles per hour. Cruises leave from the Lake George Village Dock at 13 Beach Road and last 90 minutes. The fare is $300. Passengers determine where to go and whether to make stops on the way, said Teresi.

Former Art Teacher Takes Over As Proprietor Of Sip & Canvas In Downtown Glens Falls

Posted onJune 15, 2017
Robin Brewer, a retired art teacher from Glens Falls City School District, is the new owner of Sip and Canvas in Glens Falls. The business offers art instruction and hosts events like birthday parties.

By Liz Witbeck

Robin Brewer has a lifelong passion for art.

She worked as an art teacher for Glens Falls City School District for 30 years, before retiring in 2014. Retirement did not keep her settled for long, and soon she found herself working at Sip & Canvas, a painting studio at 21 Bay St. in Glens Falls.

She is now the new owner of the business.

The painting studio was originally opened in 2014 by Amanda and Trevor Westcott. The two wanted to sell the business. When the opportunity came up, Brewer jumped at the chance.

“It seemed like a good fit. I think I can do some good things with it,” said Brewer.

She took over ownership of the studio in May.

At Sip & Canvas, people are led by an instructor to produce a painting. They can enjoy a beverage while creating their own piece of art.

Each day at Sip & Canvas, there is a unique painting being offered, she said. Interested participants can go onto the Sip & Canvas website to see a calendar of paintings. People can find a painting that looks interesting to them and make a reservation online for that night.

State Officials Say 2016 Was Record Year For Tourism Visitors, Economic Impact, Spending

Posted onJune 15, 2017

New York state’s tourism industry set new records for total number of visitors, economic impact and direct spending in 2016, officials said.

Last year, a record 239 million visitors traveled to New York state, generating an economic impact of $104.8 billion, exceeding $100 billion for the third straight year, according to the governor’s office. In addition, visitors generated an all-time high $64.8 billion in direct spending. These figures each represent a nearly 3 percent increase over 2015.

“New York’s rich culture, diverse history, scenic beauty and outdoor recreational opportunities are second to none,” Gov. Andrew Cuomo said. “With a record $104.8 billion economic impact, New York’s tourism industry is stronger than ever before and as we continue to invest in the success of world-class destinations and attractions found at every corner of the state, more and more visitors will come to experience everything New York has to offer.”

Tourism statistics were provided by Tourism Economics, an internationally recognized travel data firm, using the Impact Analysis for Planning (IMPLAN) input-output model for New York State, utilized worldwide by governments, universities, and public and private sector organizations. The model follows the flow of sales through the economy to the generation of GDP, employment, wages and taxes.

VisitLakeGeorge.com, the official online guide for the Lake George area, launched a new and improved website in May.

Managed by the Warren County Department of Tourism, the website features information on upcoming events, area attractions, restaurants and lodging properties.

“VisitLakeGeorge.com is used by visitors and locals looking for instant information about area attractions and lodging properties,” said Joanne Conley, director of the Tourism Department.

In 2016, the department restructured a number of contracts that enabled a cohesive workflow impacting branding, design and production across print, web and digital channels. Website redesign was an important component of this re-branding process, she said.

The Tourism Department partnered with AdWorkshop, a company based in Lake Placid, to redesign the site.

“We had three major goals and AdWorkshop worked closely with us to implement solutions for all of them,” said Conley.

NY State Of Health Agency Says More Than 3.6 Million New Yorkers Enrolled In Program

Posted onJune 15, 2017

NY State of Health, the state’s official health plan Marketplace, today released detailed demographic data on the more than 3.6 million New Yorkers who enrolled in a health plan through the close of the fourth open enrollment period on Jan. 31.

Approximately 18 percent of the state’s population (nearly one in five New Yorkers) enrolled in a health plan through NY State of Health as of the end of the 2017 open enrollment period, officials said. The success of NY State of Health has resulted in a significant drop in the state’s uninsured rate, from 10 to 5 percent between 2013 and 2016, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“New York State has been a national leader in enrolling people in high quality, affordable health insurance since its inception,” said state Department of Health Commissioner Dr. Howard Zucker. “The latest numbers offer further proof that the Marketplace is vital to the state’s health care system, providing consumers with the health coverage they need.”

“This past open enrollment period was our busiest yet, demonstrating that New Yorkers want and need affordable health insurance coverage,” said Donna Frescatore, executive director of NY State of Health. “Enrollment increased in every corner of the state, showing that we’re successfully reaching consumers and meeting consumer demands.”

NY State of Health 2017 Open Enrollment Report Highlights include:

• 3.6 Million New Yorkers Enrolled

• The 18 percent of the state’s population enrolled as of Jan. 31 represents a net increase of nearly 800,000 since January 2016, when 2.8 million people were enrolled.

Approximately  $1.4 million has been awarded by the AHI Performing Provider System (AHI PPS) to partner organizations in the Glens Falls region to undertake innovative health care projects.

Innovation grant funding, part of the state’s Delivery System Reform Incentive Payment (DSRIP) program’s efforts to fundamentally restructure the Medicaid system, will support the implementation of five progressive projects involving Glens Falls Hospital, Hudson Headwaters Health Network, Fort Hudson Health System, the Open Door Mission, and Warren-Washington Association for Mental Health, officials said.

All told, more than $3.9 million was awarded to 10 organizations in five North Country regions (St. Lawrence County, Saranac Lake/Essex County, Fulton County, Plattsburgh, and Glens Falls).

“Each of the awarded Innovation Grant projects in the Glens Falls region align with the overarching DSRIP goal of population health and an integrated delivery system,” said Margaret M. Vosburgh, CEO of Adirondack Health Institute.

Officials said many of the projects in the five-region PPS focus on improving behavioral health outcomes through a wide range of initiatives, including the establishment of a program to increase access to psychiatric providers via live, face-to-face, interactive telepsychiatry services in the Glens Falls region.

Albany Med Creates Preventative Health Plan Targeting Business Execs With Busy Schedules

Posted onJune 15, 2017

A new concept in preventive health care was unveiled at Albany Medical Center in May.

The only program of its kind in the region, the Executive Health Program was designed to allow busy business executives to tap into Albany Med’s extensive medical expertise, but with the personal attention and setting more reminiscent of a fine hotel than a hospital, officials said.

The program is housed in a newly constructed suite at Albany Med.

“The Executive Health Program was developed for individuals whose time is at a premium but understand the importance of being proactive about their health,” said Kevin Leyden, senior vice president for Business Development and Strategic Partnerships at Albany Medical Center. “It offers access to an outstanding team of health care professionals who can diagnose and evaluate medical problems and formulate preventive strategies.”

According to Dr. Nathan Mitkoff, medical director of the program, it provides “a comprehensive health evaluation, including a cardiac stress test, blood test and uranalysis, history and physical, and discussion of results. Optional services are also available, depending on the patient’s needs. Best of all, tests can be completed in several hours and most results shared during the appointment, which lasts about two hours—again respectful of our patient’s limited time.”
