AngioDynamics to Occupy Part Of Former Native Textiles Warehouse Space; More Tenants Coming

Posted onJanuary 10, 2018January 11, 2018

By Maureen Werther

The former Native Textiles building in Glens Falls, which has stood vacant for the past 10 years, is under new ownership and has welcomed medical device maker AngioDynamics as the first tenant of the 116,000-square-foot facility.

Native Textiles was a significant employer in the Glens Falls region, supplying fabrics to active-wear and intimate apparel manufacturers. It employed approximately 85 people at the Native Drive location, and more employees at the nearby knitting mill on Warren Street, which also shut down.

The acquisition of the old textile mill was the result of a sustained effort on the part of EDC Warren County and commercial real estate broker Steven Borgos of Howard Hanna Realty to find a buyer for the property and position it to again contribute to the economic growth of the region.

The building is situated on a 33-acre parcel of land located off Carey Road, about a mile west of Northway Exit 18.

Putting Health In Policy Making Makes New York First Age-Friendly State In The Country

Posted onJanuary 10, 2018January 11, 2018

New York state has been designated the first age-friendly state in the nation by the AARP and the World Health Organization. This achievement is a result of a directive to include health in state agency policy-making, an effort that will result in more livable communities for people of all ages and enable more New Yorkers to age comfortably in their homes.

“This administration has worked to create livable communities that support the unique needs of seniors and improve quality of life for all New Yorkers,” Gov. Andrew Cuomo said. “As we continue to support community development efforts that deliver health and wellness opportunities for residents, we are honored to be recognized by two of the world’s most prestigious organizations for establishing New York as the first age-friendly state in the nation.”

In order to achieve this designation, New York ranked high in the eight age-friendly and livable community domains outlined by WHO and AARP, which include: outdoor spaces and buildings, transportation, housing, social participation, respect and social inclusion, work and civic engagement, communication and information, and community and health services.

With the start of 2018 comes new year’s resolutions, and the GYM, which opened on Dec. 18, is ready to help people meet their fitness goals.

The GYM located in South Glens Falls in 2014. The popularity and success caused the business to outgrow its space. Now located at 762 Upper Glen St. in the Queensbury Shopping Plaza, the new, 7,300-square-foot facility offers members a larger facility, new equipment and an athletic trainer, T.J. Harrington, who once worked with the then-Anaheim Angels professional baseball team, and a physical therapist, Adam Lewis.

Unlike a standard gym, where members are left to work out independently, the GYM operates more like a training facility. When members first sign up, they receive an assessment, wherein a trainer determines what their personal fitness goals are and helps them set a schedule in order to achieve them.

From there, members are carefully supervised and attended by a professional trainer, who assures they’re utilizing the proper techniques in their workouts.

Economic Outlook 2018

Posted onJanuary 10, 2018January 12, 2018
Jeffrey Mead is general manager of Cool Insuring Arena.

By Jeffrey Mead

A year ago we were faced with an unknown.

The Adirondack Civic Center Coalition had just purchased the Adirondack Thunder to keep professional hockey in the Adirondack region long term. For the first time in what felt like an eternity, we had a vision for the future that did not involve looking for our newest tenant.

From the time we purchased the team in February 2017 until now we’ve made several strides to not only guarantee the future of professional hockey in our region, but also put a foundation in place to ensure that both team and building are sustainable in the long term.

The Adirondack region has always had a hockey team, but it never had a locally owned franchise that was successful in the long term. And the team we purchased, the Adirondack Thunder, was looking at over a $2 million dollar loss in its first two years of operation.

Beginning with a major announcement that saw the Glens Falls Civic Center transform into Cool Insuring Arena, followed by an affiliation announcement with the NHL’s New Jersey Devils this summer, we have begun to find some consistency in our team that will help us moving forward.

Stewart’s Shops Holiday Match Program Sets Record With $1.89 Million Raised For Charity

Posted onJanuary 10, 2018January 11, 2018

The 2017 Holiday Match charity program conducted annually by Stewart’s Shops raised $1.89 million for local children’s organizations.

Company officials said the fund drive set a record for the fourth consecutive season.

From Thanksgiving Day through Christmas Day, Stewart’s customers donated $945,000 to the program, which is an increase of approximately $19,000 over last season. Each individual donation is matched penny-for-penny by Stewart’s Shops.

There are no administrative costs and 100 percent of the funds benefit local, nonprofit children’s organizations.

“This program is proof that your small change can really add up and make a big impact on local kids,” said Stewart’s Shops President Gary Dake. “Teaming up with our customers to support our communities is just another reason why we say we are closer to you.”

A group of financial planners, formerly under the MassMutual banner, is now the team at Halliday Financial Services.

In January, the team left as a group and joined Halliday, a small independent broker dealer in business since 1982. About 80 percent of their clients moved with them, according to Jeffrey J. Jones, senior vice president and financial advisor.

The team has had several identities in recent years. They were originally a MetLife outpost. In July 2016, MetLife sold the team to Massachusetts Mutual.

“That was not a good fit,” Jones said, largely because they were “captive agents,” limited in the financial products they could sell to their clients.
